Sixty-One Acres

Summer is an odd mix at my house. Without the bustle of activity required to get kids to school each morning, the house feels more peaceful and serene. There are no sports or music lessons or after school extra curricular activities. Routines are paused, travel happens, camps are attended, and life marches to a different beat, even though work continues.

During this slower pace, I have felt a keen shift taking place in my walk with Jesus. Our normal cadence has slowed. The music has softened. It’s like that slow dancing scene in a movie where the bashful girl puts her head on the chest of her beau and the two dance hand in hand for the first time.

Something is changing, growing, and stirring within me. I can’t quite name it yet, but I feel it in the core of my soul—-and with it, comes great desire. Desire for deeper revelation. Desire for keener discernment. Desire for more awareness of His presence in the mundane. Desire for divine appointments.

Psalm 42:7-8 reads, “In the roar of Your waterfalls, ancient depths surge, calling out to the deep. All Your waves break over me, am I drowning? Yet in the light of day, the Eternal shows me His love. When night settles in and all is dark, He keeps me company—His soothing song, a prayerful melody to the True God of my life,” (The Voice).

There are ancient depths within the Spirit of God. He existed before time began. He was and is and is to come. There is a place in my soul that recognizes this and longs to know the ancient places within His Spirit. I long to see and know His infinite wisdom, His abundant grace, and His overwhelming goodness in a deeper and more profound way. I long for the God of the Bible who showed up for the forefathers of our faith to show up in my own life. They saw angels, knelt before burning bushes, silenced lions, had dreams, saw visions, and witnessed miraculous signs and wonders.

Yet on this quiet, calm summer night, I can’t help but wonder if all those signs and wonders only manifested because of the quiet moments. The Psalm reads, “He keeps me company—-His soothing song a prayerful melody…” Perhaps it is in sitting in the quiet company of the Father, listening to His soothing song that miracles are born. Perhaps they were only seen and witnessed because the fathers of our faith took the time to keep company with the Spirit of God. Perhaps as we cozy up to Him and listen to His heartbeat, our eyes are opened to the miracles He has already placed before us.

Jesus, we invite You to be our company. Our desire is not for emotion, experience, or the miracles themselves, but for the simple sweetness of Your presence. May we embrace Your love through the day and hear Your song through the night. May our souls evermore be changed by the fragrance of Your Presence. May our eyes and ears be opened to Your ancient depths and the wonder of Your ways.
